Protein is crucial for providing the essential amino acids required for tissue growth and repair, the production of enzymes and hormones, maintaining a healthy immune system and several other mission-critical functions. The problem is that most people don’t consume nearly enough protein to support those bodily processes optimally.
While I firmly believe that most of your body’s protein requirements should be fulfilled via animal-based, whole-food sources, high-quality protein powders such as Momentous Grass-Fed Whey offer a convenient (and delicious) way to bridge dietary gaps.
I’ve been using Momentous Grass-Fed Whey on and off since 2020, and as part of my regular diet for the past few months. In this article, I’ll share why this third-party-tested whey protein isolate powder has become one of my favorite supplements despite its premium price.

As you may have read in some of my other articles, I’m a huge fan of beef protein (including beef protein powder) because it’s relatively easy to digest. Most importantly, it mimics my regular diet, which relies heavily on grass-fed beef as the primary source of protein.
However, I also appreciate the benefits of whey protein, including its incredibly high bioavailability and good digestibility. The latter is particularly true for whey protein isolate (as opposed to concentrate), the purest form of whey (and the form that is found in most whey protein supplements).
Here at the Kummer house, we alternate between beef and whey protein powders, depending on what we have at home at any given time.
Momentous Protein Powder Review
Over the past few years, I’ve tested many protein powders, including some high-quality whey protein isolate powders. What piqued my interest in Momentous Whey Protein was its NSF certification and the inclusion of special enzymes to aid with digestion and absorption.
Both my eight-year-old son and I have relatively sensitive stomachs, and sometimes we notice mild digestive issues after consuming whey protein powders. However, neither of us noticed any discomfort after consuming Momentous Whey Protein mixed with water or raw milk.
Normally, the pancreas is responsible for producing various digestive enzymes to help with the breakdown of protein, fat and carbs. Unfortunately, a lot of people suffer from digestive issues that might negatively impact enzyme production. Others simply don’t chew their food well enough to allow the pancreas to produce the necessary enzymes before the food comes down the pike. This problem is often exacerbated by consuming liquid foods (e.g., protein shakes) which bypass the chewing process altogether.
While adding digestive enzymes to liquid foods isn’t a replacement for proper eating habits (e.g., keeping the liquid in your mouth for a moment and drinking the shake slowly instead of slurping it down in two seconds), it can help support the stomach in breaking down the protein.
Momentous Whey is available in unflavored, chocolate and vanilla. We use predominantly the chocolate version, and all the Kummers loved it, including my wife and two kids.
Mixability and clumping are often associated with protein powders, but I’m glad to report that Momentous Whey mixes easily with cold and hot beverages using a shaker bottle or frother.
I wish I could say that consuming Momentous Whey protein led to a dramatic increase in my lean muscle mass. However, I consume up to 250 grams of protein daily (I weigh 215 pounds), and my muscle protein synthesis is already operating at nearly optimal levels. As a result, I didn’t notice a difference.
However, suppose you consume less than 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight daily and start adding Momentous Whey protein to your regular diet; in that case, you’ll likely notice an increase in lean muscle mass, improved strength, and improved bone density, simply by making the available the building blocks (i.e., the amino acids) that your body needs in order to grow tissue.
The main downside of Momentous Whey Protein is that it’s priced higher than conventional whey protein isolate powders on the market.
Ingredients
One serving of Momentous Whey Protein has 20 grams of protein, comparable to other protein powders on the market. To maximize my protein intake, I often consume two full servings, mixed into 16 ounces of raw milk, after my regular breakfast to add a whopping 55 grams of protein to my first meal of the day.

It’s worth pointing out that there are minor differences in macronutrients (fat and carbs) between the unflavored and flavored versions. For example, the unflavored version has no fat or carbs, whereas the chocolate- and vanilla-flavored versions have two grams of carbs. I mention this because if you’re on a strict, very low-carb diet, you might want to opt for the unflavored version.
The second noticeable difference between the flavors is related to the additional ingredients. The unflavored version contains ProHydrolase (digestive enzymes) as the only extra ingredient. In comparison, the chocolate-flavored version contains cocoa, natural flavors, salt, monk fruit extract and organic stevia. The vanilla-flavored powder has the same extra ingredients except for cocoa.
I recommend getting the unflavored version if you’re a purist and want to avoid those extra ingredients.
Mixability and Texture
The mixability and texture of the flavored versions are both top-notch, despite the removal of sunflower lecithin and guar gum – the two ingredients I flagged in the initial version of this review, but which Momentous has since removed.
Whether you use a frother (recommended) or a simple shaker bottle, the powder mixes and dissolves easily with all the liquids I tested (water, raw milk, kefir and yogurt) while leaving a creamy texture.
However, since none of the flavors contains emulsifiers, they’re more likely than the previous versions to separate from the liquid if you don’t consume it immediately.
Aside from that, the only instance where you might experience some clumping is when you mix Momentous Whey Protein with thick liquids such as homemade kefir – mainly if you use a shaker bottle instead of a frother. I experienced some clumping when stirring the powder into raw milk kefir, but I don’t consider it a show-stopper.
Taste and Smell
The unflavored version of Momentous Whey is, as the name implies, relatively flavorless and goes unnoticed when mixed into most liquids, including milk or smoothies. It can also be used for baking without altering the flavor profile of baked goods.
I haven’t tested the vanilla-flavored version of Momentous Whey, but the chocolate-flavored powder has a rich yet non-overpowering chocolate flavor. Thanks to the included cocoa powder, it also has a pleasant smell.
We all loved the taste of Momentous Whey when mixed with various liquids, including water, milk and kefir. If you generally like the taste of chocolate or vanilla, you’ll be right at home with it.
How It Compares to Other Protein Powders
Based on my experience with consuming, testing and reviewing protein powders, I’d argue that the primary ingredient (whey protein isolate) is reasonably comparable to other products in this category. In other words, grass-fed whey protein isolate powder (the raw ingredient) is a commodity.
However, what sets Momentous Whey Protein apart from similar products on the market is its NSF certification and the inclusion of digestive enzymes that make the amino acids in the protein more bioavailable and easier to digest.
Compared to whey protein concentrate found in many less-expensive products, whey protein isolate has higher concentrations of protein and fewer impurities (e.g., fat and carbs, including lactose) and is thus easier to digest. However, the additional processing required to produce such a pure product also destroys some of whey’s micronutrients (e.g., vitamins), making it slightly less nutritious.
The bottom line is that if maximizing your protein intake and optimal digestibility are your main goals, whey protein isolate is your best bet. Also, if you’re a pro athlete and must ensure that all supplements you use have been tested for purity, forbidden substances and performance, Momentous Whey is an excellent choice.
Cost
The biggest downside to Momentous Whey, compared to other products on the market, is its list price. At around $65 per tub (or $2.70 per serving), it’s among among the priciest protein powders I’ve tested.
However, you get a premium product that has been tested and certified by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) to meet specific safety, quality, and performance standards. That’s particularly important for professional athletes because the NSF certification includes testing for substances prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Additionally, you get 200 mg of ProHydrolase per serving, a proprietary digestive enzyme made from Bacillus sp. and Ananas comosus (pineapple extract). ProHydrolase ensures your digestive tract absorbs as much protein as possible.
I believe Momentous Whey is worth the asking price if you’re in the market for a high-quality protein powder that checks all the boxes or if you’re a competing athlete who wants to get the most out of a protein supplement while resting assured that the product does not contain anything that could get you into trouble with the WADA or local anti-doping authorities.
