How to take a screenshot on macOS and create a Dropbox link

Both OS X and macOS offer built-in commands allowing you to take screenshots of the active window, the full screen and more. In this article, we will go one step further and see how to take a screenshot on macOS and automatically create a Dropbox link from it that you can share with anybody. Additionally, we will compare this technique with Annotate, an excellent third-party tool that I have used for many years. So let’s find out how to take a screenshot on macOS!

Basic: How to take a screenshot using keyboard shortcuts

Taking a screenshot on macOS (or OS X) is incredibly simple, and you don’t even need any third-party software for it.…

Guest blog: The lifestyle of a digital nomad - Marc Herbrechter

For my first guest blog, I am thrilled to have Marc Herbrechter, who I have “known” for two decades. Marc is a digital nomad and avid Mac user and here is his story.

Hi, I am Marc Herbrechter!

Just like Michael Kummer, I work in the IT industry, and we have known each other for quite some time. We talked about blogging recently, and the idea of a guest post came up.

I read through Michael’s blog a little to find out what I could write about that might be interesting to his readers, and I think I came up with some interesting lines.…

Is AmpliFi mesh networking technology better than your Wi-Fi router?

With Apple having reportedly discontinued work on its AirPort base stations, it was time to look for alternatives to the aging wireless infrastructure in my house. I wanted to find out, if new Wi-Fi Mesh networking technologies, such as the one AmpliFi provides, could replace the three Apple AirPort Extreme (AE) base stations that I had strategically positioned in our home. AmpliFi was so kind to send me a test kit, and I put it through the paces.

Essential requirements

Almost every room in my house has a gigabit ethernet (CAT 5e/6) outlet, but my Comcast Internet connection is limited to 120/20 Mbit (downstream/upstream).…

Apple AirPods vs Bose vs Plantronics

In this AirPods review, my goal was to find out if they could replace the Bose QuietComfort 35 I use for traveling or the Plantronics Savi 745 I use in the office. After a few weeks of waiting, I finally received them in the mail and started testing them. Before I get into the comparison, I wanted to share my general thoughts on the AirPods.

Google AdSense vs. Amazon Associates

I introduced ads over a year ago, with the goal to monetize my blog. It’s time to analyze what works and what doesn’t. In this article, I’ll compare Google AdSense vs. Amazon Associates and tell you which ad category has worked better for me.

If well placed and curated, ads are a useful tool, but more often than not, they are just a necessary evil. I don’t blog for a living and don’t rely on income from my blogging activity to feed my family. I enjoy blogging and love to write about issues and solutions that also affect or may help others.…

WordPress performance

How to improve the performance of your WordPress blog is an often asked and discussed question. Depending on your exact circumstances, there are hundreds of right answers. In this post, I’ll describe what I have done to improve the performance of my blog and point out areas that still need improvement. I’ll start with the basic but then drill down into specific plugins and settings I use for michaelkummer.com.

Hosting

As I have written in a previous article, one of the most important factors on performance is your hosting provider. If your host your blog on a server that shares its memory and CPU cycles with 10,000 others websites, don’t expect great results.…

Secreto Kitchen & Bar

For our date night, Kathy and I recently enjoyed dinner at a relatively new restaurant in Alpharetta called Secreto Kitchen & Bar. When it comes to food, we usually stick to what we know is good instead of trying new restaurants. But while browsing OpenTable the night before to pick a restaurant for our date, we decided to try something new, and we did not get disappointed. In fact, the outstanding experience we have made at Secreto, motivated me to make restaurant reviews a new category on my blog.

Location

Secreto is located on Windward Parkway, between a Mexican restaurant, which has the same owner as Secreto, and a CrossFit studio.…

Baby on paleo diet

If you have been following this blog, you probably know that my wife and I use the Paleo diet as the framework of our dietary lifestyle. During a recent visit to the doctor’s office, a nutritionist strongly objected to the Paleo diet because it apparently doesn’t provide the nutrients babies need to grow. So according to the nutritionist, babies should not be on a paleo diet! Continue reading to find out what’s fact vs. opinion!

Paleo in our family

Uber vs. Lyft

As a consumer, ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft have much improved my travel experience. But lately, Uber has gotten so unreliable that I stopped using the service and instead started using Lyft. In this article, I compare Uber vs. Lyft based on the experience I made over the past couple of months.

I live in Alpharetta, GA and have used Uber a lot to go to the airport. Usually, using Uber to travel back and forth from the airport is less expensive than paying for parking at the airport. Plus, I can do at least some work like answering emails while being on the road.…

Be careful when deleting photos or videos on your iPhone, iPad or Mac if you have iCloud Photo Library enabled. Plus, it is not even necessary in most cases. Continue reading to find out why!

Until recently, the base models of Apple’s iOS devices (iPhone, iPad) only had 16GB of memory. At the same time, the iPhone became our go-to camera for taking photos and recording videos. As a result, many users ran out of available storage space and thus had to regularly delete or transfer photos and videos. Then Apple introduced iCloud Photo Library, which keeps all of your photographic memories in sync across all your devices.…

Fantastical 2

Flexibit’s Fantastical is my favorite calendar application on both macOS and iOS. The app makes it incredibly easy to enter new events or reminders using natural language. The only issues I have had with Fantastical are related to shared calendar notifications in the application as well as in Notification Center. Fortunately, there is a workaround for the former and a setting to suppress the latter.

Fantastical: The calendar app you won’t be able to live without.

I share several calendars with family members but usually hide them in Fantastical, so they don’t clutter my weekly view. Unfortunately, even hidden calendars trigger notifications in Fantastical as well as in Notification Center.…

Salmon is known as a healthy food, rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. What you may not have known is that most Atlantic farmed salmon is contaminated with chemicals such as ethoxyquin (EQ), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) that is used to preserve fish food.

What is ethoxyquin?

Ethoxyquin is a synthetic antioxidant that’s added to fish food for preservation. In other words, it prevents the fat in the fish food from becoming rancid. The European Union has outlawed the use of ethoxyquin as a pesticide and has established strict limits for vegetables, fruits, nuts and meat. However, there are no limits for ethoxyquin in fish.…

Superfoods: Eggs and avocados - health benefits and nutritional information

Eggs and avocados are my two favorite superfoods that offer a lot of health benefits. Continue reading to learn why eggs and avocados should regularly be on your plate as well.

Avocados and their health benefits

Avocados are among my favorite fruits. You heard right; avocados aren’t vegetables but fruits! What makes the avocado one of my favorite fruits is their fat content. In comparison, most other fruits have a high carbohydrate content due to fructose (fruit sugar), which I try to consume only in limited quantities.
