I have never used a case for my MacBooks until BlvckbyDesign reached out to me and asked if I wanted to test their new, ultra-thin matte black MacBook Pro case. I agreed and had used their protective plastic shell for the past few weeks.
BlvckbyDesign has created a slick MacBook Pro case that offers outstanding protection without adding bulk. The only downside of the black case I tested is that you can easily see fingerprints.
Note: BlvckbyDesign has discontinued this MacBook Pro case and it’s no longer for sale.
Why use a case in the first place?
I have not used a case for my MacBook Pro so far because I enjoy looking at the industrial design Apple has created, and I don’t want to add any bulk to my super-slim 13-inch MacBook Pro. Also, I usually take excellent care of my devices and so far, I haven’t dropped or damaged any of my portable computers.
However, I have realized that regardless of how well I take care of my stuff, scratches, nicks, and small dents are almost unavoidable if you don’t use a case. That’s also the reason why I started using a case for my iPhone XS, albeit reluctantly.
Despite the best care, I have managed to scratch the bottom and top of my previous MacBooks by placing the devices on a hard and uneven surface or by accidentally dropping something on top of it. That’s where a case that covers the MacBook on both sides comes in handy.
BlvckbyDesign – Matte Black MacBook Pro Case
- Minimalistic design
- Hardshell construction offers good protection
- Thin and lightweight
- Shows fingerprints
The reason why I agreed to slap BlvckbyDesign’s case on my brand-new MacBook Pro is that I have made a good experience with their slick iPhone X case, I previously reviewed.
What I like about the case is that it doesn’t try to be fancy and stand out. Instead, it offers clean lines and a minimalistic design that doesn’t try to compete with Apple’s design of the MacBook Pro.
BlvckbyDesign made the hardshell case out of plastic that they laser-cut for a precise fit. It’s easy to install and remove because it conveniently snaps on to your MacBook via integrated clips.
While the case is black, it’s also translucent, and so you can see your device shimmer through the case. That looks kind of cool, especially because you can still see the Apple logo on the lid.
The BlvckbyDesign matte black MacBook case is only 3 millimeter (0.12 inches) thin, and as a result, it adds little bulk. In fact, the shell is so thin that I can still fit my MacBook Pro into the Yohann stand I just reviewed without any issues.
Device Compatibility
The BlvckbyDesign Signature case is available for a wide variety of MacBook models, including the following:
- 11-inch MacBook Air
- 12-inch MacBook
- 13-inch MacBook Air
- 13-inch MacBook Pro (various generations)
- 15-inch MacBook Pro (various generations)
Issues
The only minor issue I have with this MacBook case is that it shows fingerprints more prominently than the aluminum body of the MacBook Pro. As a result, I have to wipe it with a screen cleaning cloth from time to time. That’s not a huge issue, but it’s evident enough that my wife pointed it out when she borrowed my laptop the other day. I talked to BlvckbyDesign about it, and they are aware of the issue and recommend using warm water and soap to wipe the case occasionally.
Conclusion
BlvckbyDesign has created a slick MacBook Pro case that offers outstanding protection without adding bulk. The only downside of the black shell I tested is that you can easily see fingerprints. Overall, I’d recommend this case to anyone looking to protect their “investment”.
