Anker PowerWave 7.5

Anker PowerWave 7.5
Anker PowerWave 7.5
 Highlights
  • 10W Fast Charging for Samsung S9/S9+/S8/S8+/S7/Note 8
  • 7.5W Fast Charging for iPhone X/8/8 Plus
  • WaveBoost improves charging speed by up to 1 hour
  • Works with cases of up to 5mm thickness
  • Supports portrait and landscape orientation
  • Quick Charge 3.0 AC Adapter included
  • 18-Months Warranty

Anker offers various wireless charging solutions, but I’m most impressed by the Anker PowerWave 7.5, which not only supports fast charging with 7.5W and 10W for iPhone and Samsung phones but thanks to its WaveBoost technology, it’s up to one hour faster than competitive solutions. WaveBoost is a solution that combines state-of-the-art cooling technology with a dedicated chipset.

The PowerWave 7.5 charging stand also impresses with a solid build quality that includes an anti-slip surface and a raised front-lip that keeps your phone securely positioned in the charger. The latter, unfortunately, makes it difficult to unlock an iPhone X when swiping up from the bottom while the phone is docked.

Asunflower Dual Wireless Charger

Asunflower Dual Wireless Charger
 Highlights
  • 7.5W Fast Charging for Samsung and iPhone
  • Can simultaneously charge an Apple Watch Series 2/3
  • Lifetime Warranty

What makes the Asunflower Dual Wireless Charger unique, is its ability to charge a compatible phone and Apple Watch Series 2/3 at the same time. That feature is one of the reasons why I carry this wireless pad in my backpack while traveling.

The Asunflower charger is the only wireless charging pad I have seen that offers a lifetime warranty, but unfortunately, it does not include an AC adapter and the maximum power output for Samsung phones is limited to 7.5W, instead of the 10W other wireless chargers support.

Belkin Boost Up Wireless Charging Stand

Belkin Boost Up
Belkin Boost Up
 Benefits
  • 10W Fast Charging for Samsung S9/S9+/S8/S8+/S7/Note 8
  • 7.5W Fast Charging for iPhone X/8/8 Plus
  • Charges in landscape and portrait mode
  • Foreign object detection
  • $2,500 connected equipment warranty
  • AC wall adapter and cable included
  • 2-Year warranty with a 1-year extension
  • Available in four different colors

Belkin announced its Boost UP 10W Wireless Charging Stand at CES, and it finally went on sale in May of 2018. I like the design of Belkin’s wireless charging stand because it’s different from most of its competitors. Belkin converted a charging disk into a stand, which enables you to charge your phone in either landscape or portrait mode.

As one of the most expensive chargers in the test, the Boost Up delivers fast charging of up to 10 Watts via the included wall adapter, and it features a warranty of up to three years. You get two years out of the box, but you can request a free one-year extension.

Belkin Boost Up charges in landscape and portrait mode
Belkin Boost Up charges in landscape and portrait mode

The other thing I like about the Belkin charger is that it’s available in four different colors. As of this writing, Belkin only offers black, white, and pink but a fourth color will be available in the future. Last but not least, Belkin offers a $2,500 connected equipment warranty.

That means, if your phone gets damaged while charging, Belkin reimburses you for the damage. However, if that warranty is anything like the ones offered by manufacturers of surge protectors, they’ll make you jump through hoops to file a claim. So I see the warranty more as a marketing gimmick than anything else.

Burkley Leather Fast Charger

Burkley Leather Wireless Charging Pad
Burkley Leather Wireless Charging Pad
 Pros
  • 10W Fast Charging for Samsung S9/S9+/S8/S8+/S7/Note 8
  • 7.5W Fast Charging for iPhone X/8/8 Plus
  • Cow leather looks beautiful
  • Hassle-free phone alignment
  • Only 9mm thin

Burkley is known for premium, yet affordable leather accessories for mobile devices. By using genuine cowhide leather, Burkley has managed to create a beautiful and decorative charging pad that stands out from the competition with its design.

Like most of the other products I have reviewed, the Burkley Leather Wireless Charger supports fast charging as long as you provide sufficient input power. Unfortunately, Burkley doesn’t include an AC wall adapter, so you have to make sure that your USB power source provides sufficient output to enable fast charging.

Burkley Leather Wireless Charging Pad

The Burkley charger has only a single coil, but interestingly enough, I have never had any issues with phone alignment. It seems like regardless of how I place my iPhone X on the charger, it always starts charging immediately. My wife is currently using the Burkley Fast Charger on her nightstand because she finds the design appealing and doesn’t care about propping up her iPhone overnight using a charging stand as I do.

 Benefits
  • 9W Fast Charging for Samsung S9/S9+/S8/S8+/S7/Note 8
  • 7.5W Fast Charging for iPhone X/8/8 Plus
  • Combination of charging stand and charging pad
  • Robust and stable charging platform
  • Includes riser for larger phones
  • Works in portrait and landscape mode
  • AC adapter included
  • Available in black and white
  • 2 Year Warranty

Case-Mate’s Power Pad is an incredibly versatile wireless charging solution that you can use either as a charging stand or a charging pad. The pad and the stand are two separate pieces, which means you can leave the stand on your desk and throw the pad into your backpack if you want to take it with you on a trip.

Case-Mate Power Pad in landscape mode
Case-Mate Power Pad in landscape mode

Case-Mate also includes an 18W adaptive quick-charge wall adapter to enable 7.5W fast charging for iPhone and 9W fast charging for compatible Samsung phones. I used to have the Power Pad on my office desk but then decided to put it on my nightstand instead. Why? For two reasons:

  1. It’s incredibly stable and reduces the risk of me knocking it over when I’m sleepy and trying to grab my phone.
  2. The way Case-Mate designed the stand makes it difficult to swipe up to unlock my iPhone X. I don’t mind that limitation when my iPhone is charging overnight because, while in bed, I always take it off the charger before unlocking it.

If you do care about swipe gestures and you’d like to use the Power Pad on your desk, you can use the included riser to work around the issue.

 Highlights
  • Five coils to charge multiple devices simultaneously
  • Support for all common charging speeds (5, 7.5, and 10W)
  • Slim profile
  • USB-C port

The Choetech PowerDual charger is the only 5-coil fast charger in this review. The extra coils not only it much easier to correctly align your phone on the charging pad, but it also enables you to recharge multiple devices at the same time.

As a result, you could simultaneously charge an iPhone and an Android phone side-by-side, using different charging speeds. That’s pretty slick!

Choetech Coil Design
Choetech Coil Design

Despite a large number of coils, the Choetech pad is relatively thin, and it doesn’t take up more space than an iPhone XS. Choetech has to versions of this charging pad for sale, so that you can pick between the pad only, or the pad and a matching Qualcomm wall charger.

It’s also worth noting, that Choetech uses a more modern USB-C connector, instead of the standard micro-USB port to power its pad. Since most of my devices now feature USB-C, I appreciate that I don’t have to carry a micro-USB cable if I want to use the PowerDual pad while traveling.

  • 7.5W Fast charging for iPhone X/8/8 Plus
  • IPX5 Waterproof
  • 10mm thin
  • 18 Months Warranty

What makes the Cubevit Fast Wireless Charger stand out from the competition is its IPX5 waterproof rating. IPX5 means that while the device is not dust-proof, it protects the internals against water projected by a nozzle, such as a showerhead or a kitchen faucet.

However, it does not mean that you can or should submerge the charger in water. Still, the waterproof rating makes this wireless charging pad uniquely suited for use in your kitchen or bathroom.

Additionally, the Cubevit wireless charger features 10W/7.5W fast charging, but it doesn’t include the necessary Quick Charge wall adapter.

Grovemade Wireless Charging Pad

Grovemade Wireless Charging Pad
Grovemade Wireless Charging Pad
 Benefits
  • Beautifully designed and crafted
  • 5W Charging for all Qi-compatible devices
  • USB cord wraps underneath the charging pad

The wireless charging pad from Grovemade is the only unit in this review that does not support fast charging. Instead, it only offers 5W power output to all Qi-compatible smartphones. I decided to include Grovemade in this review anyway because I appreciate the quality of their craftsmanship. I own several Grovemade products, and they are all hand-made in their Portland (Oregon) facility.

The other thing I like about the Grovemade charger is that you can hide the cable by wrapping it underneath the charging pad. That makes for a much cleaner look on your desk or nightstand. Unlike, some other brands, Grovemade also includes a wall adapter and a USB plug.

LXORY Wireless Charging Pad
 Pros
  • 9W Fast Charging for Samsung S9/S9+/S8/S8+/S7/Note 8
  • 7.5W Fast Charging for iPhone X/8/8 Plus
  • Charges up to two devices simultaneously
  • Extra USB port to charge a 3rd device (wired)
  • Includes a fast charging AC adapter
  • Slick design

The LXORY Dual Wireless Charging Pad is one of the few solutions on the market that supports charging multiple devices simultaneously. In fact, the LXORY charging pad can wirelessly charge two phones at the same time, and, additionally, it offers a USB-A port to charge a third device via USB cable. LXORY supports fast charging and includes the necessary wall adapter, so you don’t have to worry about how to provide sufficient power.

What I like about the LXORY wireless charging pad is its slick and modern design. LXORY uses plastic for its pad, but compared to alternative charging pads, the LXORY product doesn’t look or feel cheaply made.

LXORY Dual Charging Pad
LXORY Wireless Charging Pad Features

Considering the ability to charge multiple devices at the same time and its slick design, I recommend using the LXORY wireless charging pad in a central area of your home, such as a kitchen. That way, you can charge up to three devices at the same time, without occupying multiple wall outlets.

LXORY has launched a new wireless charging stand that provides simultaneous charging support for both a smartphone and the Apple Watch. Check it out here.

The only disadvantage of the LXORY charging pad is that it has only a single coil on each side, which makes positioning the phone more of a hassle than with other wireless chargers. Also, I couldn’t find out how long of a warranty LXORY offers.

The Mophie Charge Stream Pad+ is a simple wireless charging pad without any bells and whistles. However, don’t let the lack of fancy features fool you, it’s an incredibly well-made product that offers top charging speeds, a non-slip design, foreign object detection, and overheat protection.

Plus, it includes a Quick Charge 2.0 wall adapter and a 1.5m (4.9ft) cable. Like Case-Mate, Mophie offers a two-year warranty for its Charge Stream Pad+.

Nomad Wireless Travel Stand
 Benefits
  • 7.5W Fast Charging for iPhone and Samsung phones
  • Combination of charging stand and charging pad
  • The kickstand is removable for traveling
  • Leather top surface looks beautiful
  • AC adapter included

As the name implies, the Nomad stand is ideal for traveling, because you can conveniently remove its kickstand and store it on the back of the charging pad. Nevertheless, I decided to use the Nomad Wireless Travel Stand on my office desk because it’s one of the few premium stands I have tested that does not interfere with the iPhone X swipe gestures.

Nomad Travel Stand Without the Kickstand
You can tuck away the kickstand for when you don’t need it

I also appreciate how well-made the Nomad charging stand is and how stunning the leather on the top surface looks. Similar to other high-end brands, Nomad includes a Quick Charge wall adapter and a 1.5-meter cable.

Since testing the Nomad charging stand, the company has released a pretty cool charging base they call the “Base Station.” It’s available in two versions, including one that can simultaneously charge a smartphone and an Apple Watch. Check it out here.

 Benefits
  • 10W Fast Charging for Samsung S9/S9+/S8/S8+/S7/Note 8
  • 5W Fast Charging for iPhone X/8/8 Plus
  • 4 Charging Coils to easy alignment
  • Quick Charge Adapter included

The RAVPower is the only wireless charging pad in this review that features four charging coils. The advantage of that is that it massively increases the charging area. As a result, you can place your phone almost anywhere on the charging pad, and it’ll work.

The RAVPower features 4 charging coils
The RAVPower features four charging coils

As you might expect from a premium charging pad, the RAVPower features 10W fast charging for compatible Samsung devices, and it also includes a matching Quick Charge 3.0 wall adapter. What’s a bit disappointing is that the wireless charging pad does not offer fast charging for iPhone. So if you want to use this pad with an iPhone, you’ll be stuck with 5W output power, instead of the 7.5W, the iPhone supports.

Samsung Convertible Wireless Charging Stand/Pad

Samsung Convertible Charging Pad/Stand

 Benefits
  • 9W Fast Charging for Samsung S9/S9+/S8/S8+/S7/Note 8
  • 5W Fast Charging for iPhone X/8/8 Plus
  • Combination of charging stand and charging pad
  • Quick Charge Adapter included

Unlike Apple, Samsung does offer first-party wireless charging solutions. The model I like most is a convertible charging pad/stand, which makes it a convenient travel companion. Samsung supports 9W fast charging for its flagship phones and 5W charging for all other Qi-compatible phones, including the iPhone.

Considering that I’m an iPhone owner, the charger is limited to 5W power output and based on the photo above; it looks like as if the “chin” would interfere with swipe gestures on the iPhone X, I wouldn’t recommend it. For owners of Samsung phones, on the other hand, it looks like an attractive wireless charger.

Yayuu Charging Station

Yayuu Charging Station
Yayuu Charging Station
 Highlights
  • Multi-device charging stations
  • Charges iPhone via the Lightning port or wirelessly
  • Support for Apple Watch and Apple AirPods

The Yayuu charging station stands out from this review because it’s much more than a wireless charging pad. It also supports wired charging of another iPhone, an Apple Watch, and the charging case of Apple’s AirPods. In other words, the Yayuu charging station is one-stop-shop for all your charging needs. I have a couple of friends who have two phones, one for work and one for personal use. If you fall into that category and also own an Apple Watch or AirPods, the Yayuu charging station is the perfect gadget for your office or nightstand.

Yayuu Charging Station on my desk
Yayuu Charging Station on my desk

As feature-rich as the Yayuu charging station is, it also has some disadvantages that I’d like to point out. For example, the charging solution consists of multiple individual pieces that are held together by screws that get loose over time. When they do, you may experience a rattling noise, when docking your iPhone.

Yayuu uses screws to secure the cable connectors
Yayuu uses screws to secure the cable connectors

Additionally, the Lightning connectors for the iPhone and AirPods charging case are held in place by screws. If you tighten the screws up too much, you damage the connector; if you don’t, they can come loose. Finally, the wireless charging pad doesn’t support fast-charging and is limited to 5W. If you charge your phone overnight, that’s likely not going to be an issue, but otherwise, it may be.

What is wireless charging?

Wireless charging refers to the ability to charge a battery-powered device, such as a mobile phone, without the need for connecting a cable to the device you want to charge.

The driving force behind wireless charging is magnetism. When an electric current flows through the charging coils of a wireless charging pad (the transmitter), it produces an electromagnetic field that transmits a charge to the corresponding receiver in your device (for example, your mobile phone).

However, the word “wireless” is a bit misleading because, with today’s “wireless” charging technology, there is still a cable involved. The cable just goes into the charging pad (transmitter), instead of into the device (receiver).

What is the wireless Qi charging standard?

There are a few different wireless charging standards available today but the most widely supported one is called Qi and was introduced by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC).

Qi technology supports both induction and resonant wireless charging, and while most wireless charging pads use inductive charging, there are exciting use cases for the less powerful resonant wireless charging technology.

With inductive charging technology, the charge passes between a transmitter and receiver coil placed closely together, usually only separated by the outer casing of the two devices (<7mm). The coils must be aligned to make the connection, making inductive charging great for direct-contact applications. Some Qi transmitters use a multi-coil system, eliminating the need to align the device with the charging area. (WPC)

In the case of resonant wireless charging, you could, for example, mount a transmitter under a table and charge devices placed on top of the table, without requiring an exact alignment between the coils in the transmitter and the devices’ receivers.

Wireless charger for iPhone

Apple has been lagging behind the competition when it comes to supporting “wireless” charging. However, with the introduction of the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X, Apple finally added support for inductive charging using the Qi standard. Unfortunately, Apple’s current flagship phones are limited to 7.5W fast charging, while Samsung’s leading phones support up to 10W of fast charging.

Pros and cons of wireless charging

You may wonder what are the benefits of wireless charging if you still have a cable to connect and worry about?

 Pros
  • Only a single cable to worry about
  • No need to frequently plug/unplug a charging cable
  • Some charging pads can charge multiple devices at the same time
  • It is quicker to place the device on a charging pad than to connect a cable
 Cons
  • Often slower than wired charging
  • Not compatible with all phone cases
  • Most pads require a proper alignment between charging coils and device

In my opinion, wireless charging does have some benefits, but it is not (yet) the killer feature some early adopters made it out to be. For many users, the main drawback of wireless charging is that it is usually slower than wired charging.

To make their device more attractive, some manufacturers have added additional features to their wireless charging pads, such as:

  • Ability to charge multiple devices at the same time,
  • Use of high-end materials, such as leather,
  • Offer better viewing angles while charging.
Apple AirPower Charging Pad
Apple AirPower Wireless Charging Pad

Apple’s response to that challenge was the announcement of the AirPower mat that is capable of charging your iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods case at the same time. Once the Apple wireless charging mat becomes available, I will update this article!

The elegant, ultra-thin new AirPower mat lets you charge multiple devices wirelessly, without requiring them to be fixed in one spot. Just lay up to three compatible devices — like the latest iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods — anywhere on its surface to charge them simultaneously (apple.com)

Benefits of Wireless Charging

The clear benefit of wireless charging pads is that you don’t have to plug a charging cable into your mobile phone anymore. Plus, placing your phone on a charging pad is more convenient than having to connect a cable, and it results in less “wear and tear” on your cables and the charging port on your mobile device.

Additionally, some charging pads support charging multiple devices at the same time. That’s incredibly convenient in a household with multiple phones. Just put a charging pad on the kitchen counter, and you and other members of the household can charge their devices at the same time, without occupying multiple power outlets.

For your nightstand or office desk, you could use a wireless charging pad that props your phone up at an angle. That makes it more convenient to look at the screen, read messages or watch a movie while the phone is charging.

Disadvantages of Wireless Charging

A significant disadvantage of today’s wireless charging technology is that you still need a cable and you have to put your phone in physical contact with the charging pad.

The good news is, technology already exists, albeit in the lab, to charge devices over a distance of a few feet. So at some point, you will be able to charge your device by walking into a room that is equipped with true wireless charging technology.

Another disadvantage is the speed at which today’s Qi standard can charge supported devices. LXORY performed tests to determine how long it takes to charge the battery of an iPhone 8 to 50% and 100% using a 9W “fast charger.” The results indicate that wireless charging is still slower than wired charging:

  • 0-50%: 2.5 hours
  • 0-100%: 4:05 hours

In comparison, charging the battery of an iPhone X to 56% with an iPad 18W charger only takes 45 minutes. Using the new 18W USB-C charger from Apple, you can charge an iPhone X to 50% in only 30 minutes. To learn more about charging speed, check out my article covering the fastest way to charge an iPhone.

iPhone Xs Charging Speeds Compared
iPhone Xs Charging Speeds Compared (Source: MacRumors)

Note: In order to achieve the highest possible charging speeds (fast charging), make sure to provide enough input power. Most single-coil pads require at least 9W, pads that support multiple devices, such as the one from LXORY require 18W of input.

In my experience, charging speed has barely been an issue. I have one wireless charging pad on my nightstand to charge my iPhone X overnight, and another one on the desk in my office that charges my phone while I am working.

In those cases, where I am in a rush and need to charge my iPhone as quickly as possible, I enable airplane mode and connect it to a 12W iPad charger. Enabling airplane mode reduces battery consumption, and the 12W iPad charger provides enough current to recharge my phone quickly.

The two other minor disadvantages of wireless charging are related to the support of cases and the exact placement of the mobile phone on the pad.

Most of the iPhone X cases I recently reviewed are fully wireless charging compatible. The few that aren’t, have built-in credit card slots and it is not advisable to place credit cards on inductive charging pads because your cards may get demagnetized.

I am currently using the Twelve South Relaxed Leather Case (twelvesouth.com) which has two credit card slots on the back. To make the case wireless charging compatible, I am only carrying my driver’s license and permanent resident card (green card) in it while I have my credit cards in the Ögon Carbon Card Clip.

Regarding phone placement, I have noticed that my iPhone X won’t charge if I don’t place it centered on the charging pads I have at home. In other words, you need to align the charging coil in the pad with the corresponding receiver in your phone.

All charging pads I tested have visual charging indicators (LED indicator light), so you’ll immediately see if you have correctly positioned your phone or not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you connect a charging pad to the USB port of your computer?

You most certainly can, but you won’t get “fast charging” because most USB ports provide only 5V and 900mA, resulting in 4.5 Watts of output. For Apple computers, see this knowledge base article for more information.

What phone cases are compatible with wireless charging?

Most cases that are less than a few millimeters thick are compatible. Just avoid placing cases that hold credit cards on wireless charging pads because you may demagnetize your cards. For a list of compatible iPhone X cases, see my review.

Is wireless charging compatible with battery packs?

Most battery packs are not compatible with wireless charging devices, but there are some exceptions. One example is Apple’s latest battery pack or battery case, which is available for select iPhone models.

What’s the best Qi charger?

Wireless charging is a relatively young technology with a ton of potential for the future. I suppose that’s one of the reasons why Apple took so long to add support for inductive charging to its iPhone lineup.

I had the opportunity to review some of the best wireless chargers on the market, and I enjoyed using most of them. Each wireless charger offers unique benefits, either due to features or design and that makes them worth the investment for many users.

I certainly appreciate the additional convenience they offer, and I am looking forward to a future that offers true wireless charging. Just imagine boarding a plane or eating in a restaurant while your devices are charging automatically.

At that point battery life is likely to become much less critical than it is today. In regards to the question “What is the best wireless charger?”, I couldn’t recommend just one product, but I can tell you that I’m currently using various models throughout the house.
